My Sims 2 gameplay page
My Sims 2 Renaissance began in the summer of 2025 when I wasn’t in a great place mentally and needed a distraction. Influenced by all the Sims 2 videos that kept showing up in my YouTube recs, I installed it for the first time in more than a decade and tried a playstyle completely different to how I used to play as a kid. I properly played some of the premade families for the first time, tried rotational gameplay, downloaded mods... I’m now completely obsessed! I’ve been having so much fun coming up with headcanons for the premades. I created this page to document my progress.
As you can see in the sidebar, the main neighborhood I’m playing is Strangetown. I attached all the Maxis subhoods except for Academie Le Tour and one subhood I want to create more or less from scratch (Spectral Line). I've always had a soft spot for Strangetown and its premade families. Even though I never really played them, I loved them as art objects of sorts. I'm excited to see how my game expands their storylines! It's a bit overwhelming to play all the neighborhoods at once, though, so I'm introducing them gradually. (newest to oldest)✦ After graduating from La Fiesta Tech, Gunnar Roque has been living in the Strangetown motel and bringing a different woman to his room every night. He doesn't even have a job! What do they *see* in him??
✦ Hallelujah: local serial killer Cosgood Creeps finally killed someone! His first victim turned out to be a federal agent, though, so Creeps better watch out.
✦ Huge news in the Picaso family: they finally adopted a baby *and* Jessica was offered a position in the local council after being fired from the military! She also may have flirted with someone who wasn't her husband, but shhhh...
✦ General Buzz got a hefty bonus at work (something about saving several major cities from a faulty satellite) and was finally able to purchase a community lot. Next up: opening a sports equipment store! He also built a small bunker in his home, btw. A totally normal thing to do.
✦ General Buzz is hooking up with a uni professor. Not sure what she sees in him, but she already wants to get hitched. He's not a fan of that.
✦ It's been a long time coming, but Kristen Loste of the Singles household finally hooked up with one of her roommates - drumroll, please - Chloe Curious! Was Kristen, perhaps, using Chloe as proxy for her sister Lola with whom Kristen has a bit of a homoerotic rivalry?
✦ Erin Beaker finally got a job (in the slacker field), became a good witch and moved in with her townie boyfriend. It doesn't seem like he's planning on being faithful to her, however. Or that he wants to get married at all.
✦ Lola Curious and Ajay Loner (of the motel fame) finally moved in together and we hear wedding bells on the horizon. Now they will finally be able to join efforts and focus on what they both want the most: becoming rich.
✦ Ajay Loner, who lives in a local motel, almost got robbed! I mean, sure, he had a stereo in his room that he purchased himself, but still, a motel room wouldn't be my primary target if I were a robber... But that's just me, I guess. It all ended well anyway. Justice prevailed. Ajay, however, was clearly traumatized.
✦ After Loki Beaker's wife had left him for his new coworker, he was seen trying to befriend the local wolf pack. Men will do anything but go to therapy.
✦ The Beakers' test subject managed to escape and now lives with the Curious brothers and their alien children. He's not that big of a help around the house due to the horrifying experiments the Beakers performed on him, but he's trying. He's been processing his trauma through painting on the easel that originally belonged to Lazlo. By the time Nervous came to live with them, Lazlo had moved on from painting to bug collecting. Which hobby will he try next?
✦ Pollination Technician #9 has rolled the want for a relative to get gay married (or joined if we use the 2004 term). He may have #9 in his name, but he's #1 when it comes to being an ally!
✦ Johnny Smith and Ophelia Nigmos welcomed their first child but there hasn't been a wedding yet! Scandalous!

Gameplay "rules"

These are all subject to change and there are probably exceptions to each rule. I'll add them here as I go along.
General
- I try to avoid planning the characters' whole future and micromanaging them. Instead, I try to let them decide it themselves and I use the wants they roll as storytelling inspiration. I'm not playing purely wants-based - it feels too repetitive to me.
- When it's time to choose a Sim's aspiration, I try to analyze their personality and decide which aspiration suits them best based on my own interpretation rather than an aspiration calculator.
- If the game generates a lifetime want that I don't like or that I don't think suits that particular Sim, I don’t reroll it and instead try to come up with a reason why they might want it or what it says about their personality.
- Speaking of LTWs, it's also simply not my goal for everyone to achieve their LTW. That's just life.
Relationships
- Two sims are only allowed to get married if their chemistry is 2 bolts or more. Sometimes I will allow a one-bolt marriage, but only in exceptional cases.
- Alien-born Sims can impregnate their partners regardless of either party's gender.
Education
- Knowledge Sims are the only ones who strive to have a perfect grade, do all uni assignments and write term papers.
Misc
- For now, aliens and half-aliens are only allowed to live in Strangetown and study at La Fiesta Tech, but they’ll eventually expand to other neighborhoods.
- For future consideration: alien mods; come up with a system that distinguishes "full" aliens from Sims with alien ancestry
